Despite all of the sheer crap that is said on morning radio stations. Very few take it this far. On May 28th, “Rob, Arnie, & Dawn in the Morning” radio talk show took radio to an entirely new low – and are directly endangering transgender children everywhere.
The hosts, Rob Williams and Arnie States, devoted the segment in question to a vicious diatribe against transgender children, some as young as five, focusing in particular on the case of one Omaha family raising a gender dysphoric child, and their decision to support her transition from male to female.
Williams and States took turns referring to gender dysphoric children as “idiots” and “freaks,” who were just out “for attention” and had “a mental disorder that just needs to somehow be gotten out of them,” either by verbal abuse on the part of the parents, or even shock therapy.
“Allowing transgenders to exist, pretty soon it becomes normal to fall in love with the animals,” they said.
For his part, States bragged that if his own son were to ever dare put on a pair of high heels, States would beat his son with one of his own shoes. He urged parents whose own little boys expressed a desire to wear a dress to verbally abuse and degrade them as a viable response. “Because you know what? Boys don’t wear high heel shoes. And in my house, they definitely don’t wear high heels.
“I’m going to go, ‘You know what? You’re a little idiot! You little dumbass!’” States sneered, adding later, “I look forward to when [the transgender children] go out into society and society beats them down. And they wind up in therapy.”
…. “I’m not open-minded once I look into sumpin’” one of the two men grunted at the beginning of the segment, their voices interchangeable. “I have every right to call you a freak and judge you on that. It makes me sick. ‘Mommy, I’m a girl trapped in a boy’s body,’” he simpered, mimicking an effeminate little boy. “I want to wear a dwess.”
They berated co-host Dawn Rossi, who seemed genuinely horrified by the rising crescendo of ugliness towards the children and their parents from States and Williams.
“You’re actually defending allowing people to become freaks?” they seethed. “A boy who wants to wear a dress is a freak. A nut.” Comparing transgender children to “fat bastard kids on Maury,” States and Williams urged advocates of transgender children to “stop hiding behind research and laws,” whose authority they wholeheartedly reject. Braying with the certitude of the jubilantly ignorant, States and Williams revealed to listeners that “transgenders [sic] did not exist four decades ago,” apparently unaware of the historical fact that transgender individuals have existed in every culture throughout recorded history, including in native American cultures where the “two spirited” were revered as teachers, healers, and shamans.
“If the kid ever gets to be eighteen,” States snarled, “and says ‘I still feel like a woman!’ you say, ‘Get out! Go be a freak! And understand, SON, that society will never accept you because we still have some moral judgment.”

The casual link between Dr. Tiller’s death and Bill O’Reilley’s obsessive baiting of Dr. Tiller on his show, cannot go unnoticed. It’s this link, that makes these talk show hosts equally as dangerous. The verbal violence of this show is not simply transphobia, but a direct assault on transgender children and individuals. I am absolutely terrified of the escalating violence that seems to be rising…
Among the comments made by the hosts:
ROB WILLIAMS [11:12]: This is a weird person who is demanding attention. And when it’s a child, all it takes is a hug, maybe some tough love or anything in between. When your little boy said, ‘Mommy, I want to walk around in a dress.’ You tell them no cause that’s not what boys do. But that’s not what we’re doing in this culture.
ARNIE STATES [13:27]: If my son, God forbid, if my son put on a pair of high heels, I would probably hit him with one of my shoes. I would throw a shoe at him. Because you know what? Boys don’t wear high heels. And in my house, they definitely don’t wear high heels.
ROB WILLIAMS [17:45]: Dawn, they are freaks. They are abnormal. Not because they’re girls trapped in boys bodies but because they have a mental disorder that needs to be somehow gotten out of them. That’s where therapy could help them.
ROB WILLIAMS [18:15]: Or because they were molested. You know a lot of times these transgenders were molested. And you need to work with them on that. The point is you don’t allow the behavior. You cure the cause!
There is a poll on the talk show’s website about the comments. The full audio link has conveniently been removed.

Not once did they ever stop to reflect on what exactly is making them so uncomfortable. “Boys don’t wear heels.” Ummm…why? UGH I HATE PEOPLE.
I also noticed they harped a lot on the boy –> girl transitioning, rather than the other way around. Iiiiiinteresting.
Samia,
You bring up a good point that I have really had yet to talk about in my blog. The visibility of transgender women in media and how they are subject to much of the harassment is incredibly reflective of our patriarchial society. “The System” (white, upperclass, able-bodied, heterosexual, males) sees nothing wrong (most of the time) with women that want to become men. However, why would a man, who is a position of power, desire to leave the power stance for the submissive role? Obviously, he must possess a pathological disorder…
Following me? This sentiment is reflective in how we treat and view transwomen in all realms. The media emphasizes their transformation with before/after pictures, showing them “getting ready”, or by creating “revealing” headlines (a most extreme case being Jerry Springer and Maury using show titles like ‘She’s REALLY a He!’). Dually, transgender women are subjected to the most extreme violence our community faces — this is not saying that transmen do not face the same kind of violence, it is just not as frequent or noticeable.
We can even go to films. The Crying Game being a perfect example of the status quo that is being upheld. The shocking, surprise twist ending, where the main character literally vomits after discovering that his love interest is transgender, has done immense cultural damage on how cisgender people view transgender individuals as deceptive.
I could go on, and on.. Actually, Julia Serano spends most of her book, “Whipping Girl”, on this subject. If you haven’t read it, you should check it out.
In a word: YES. This would be why we can wear pants. And why “being one of the guys” is a good thing for us chickadees. Basically any move towards maleness is good and makes us smarter and more “objective” (=male– love the circular logic). The value system is totally skewed.
I have yet to read Serano’s book, but I’ve seen some of her writing online and she’s pretty brill.
Random: I read a really sweet novel a while back about a married hetero man who discovers crossdressing and slowly starts to take on a female identity. He and his wife never really talk about it…she just tenderly helps her partner become a she. I can’t remember the name of it, but I read it in like junior high or something and thought it was the ultimate love story.
This makes me feel both terrified of their bigotry and hatred, and also extremely angry that these morons would assume to know so much about “those transgenders” and that we are all molested, and somehow therapy will help. The worst part? Someone out there is probably listening, and agreeing with them because they don’t know any better.
