Resources

“I Think I May Be Trans/Genderqueer/Ect”

These are some good resources to begin with if you are questioning/exploring. While they may be duplicated in other categories, I figured it would be important to move them up here under one heading
xyrights
T-Vox is a wonderful Wikipedia-like search engine that offers lots of information for trans folks and allies. Their page on questioning is particularly helpful. Other sites offer more details focusing on specific areas, but this one is the best intro resource.

Checking out your local area would be beneficial. See if there is an LGBT resource center, groups, or other areas of support. Check and see if there are any trans-specific organizations around, also.

Southern Comfort Conference is the nation’s largest annual transgender conference. It’s hosted in Atlanta, GA every year and is a great way to network, have a safe place to play with gender, go to workshops to learn, and meet new people! There are full and partial scholarships for first time conference goers. Anyone can submit a workshop proposal, and workshop leaders also get financial assistance with the conference cost. I highly recommend it. Also, SCC has the Robert Eads Health Project, which is aimed to provide trans men with free, confidential, trans-friendly gynecological exams.

My Gender Workbook: How to Become a Real Man, a Real Woman, the Real You, or Something Else Entirely Kate Bornstien

Also, look at other people’s blogs and sites. It’s helpful to see people blog about their identities and experiences. However, keep in mind that everyone’s experience will be different!

Resources for Children with Trans Parents

There is a great trans specific resource guide for children of transgender parents, made by one of my friends who works for COLAGE. You can find the PDF resource guide here. Also, check out , and COLAGE’s Website for more resources.

General Family Resources

COLAGE’s Resource Page Mostly geared at transgender parents, and kids of transgender parents.

Resources For Parents

Teleconference Support Group Support group for parents of transgender children that happens from 5-7pm on the third Sunday of every month. To get more information call 1-877-809-4159 or email info@genderspectrum.org.

Also, maybe check out internet listservs like Yahoo! Groups. In particular this listserv is geared towards parents whose daughters have come out to them as trans men. There’s 101 people on the listserv, and it seems pretty active.

Gender Spectrum: Family Conference

PFLAG: Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays They have a particular section devoted to transgender individuals. Also, their support groups seem to be a popular way for parents to connect with each other. They tend to be located only in major cities, though.

Transgender Related Blogs:

Questioning Transphobia Wonderful blog, but not recommended for those unable to handle reading about recent acts violence against transgender individuals (as there are often posts about this).

Tranzmission
Tranzmission started about six years ago as a result of transgender people in a certain community not having their name or pronoun respected, so they organized to “end socially enforced gender tyranny.” Tranzmission puts out zines, does healthcare fundraising, holds Trans 101 workshops at community centers, nonprofits, universities, conferences, and religious establishments, has taught self-defense classes for trans people, does punk rock drag shows, and helps to organize Asheville’s Stonewall Commemorative Day. One of their major projects is a queer trans prison support project. Members of Tranzmission send books to and are pen pals for queer and trans people in prison. Tranzmission is member-driven. Goals for the group include collaborating with other groups, increasing the diversity of their membership, starting a transgender health fund, creating a health clinic in the Southeast that addresses trans people’s health needs, and continuing to build community and celebrate trans culture. Tranzmission is also based out of Ashville, NC. For more information contact : Zeek Christopoulos  at tranzeek@yahoo.com

Carolina Transgender Society
Carolina Transgender Society (formerly KAPPA BETA) was founded in 1988 as the first North Carolina chapter of the Society of the Second Self (more commonly known as “TRI-ESS”), but has now dropped that affiliation because that organization is not inclusive of the transgender continuum. They are centrally located in Charlotte and have been serving NC and surrounding states for over 20 years with a significant following in many areas of both North and South Carolina, and attract members from as far away as Virginia and Kentucky. They meet on the third Saturday of each month primarily at mainstream public hotels and gay/lesbian restaurants.

Religious Resources:

Jewish Mosaic This links to a portion of the Jewish Mosaic site that has a wonderful “Trans Respect/Etiquette/Support 101″ PDF guide down at the bottom.

Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations If you are seeking religious support in an environment that will be more inclined to be accepting of an LGBTQIA identity, these churches tend to be great resources. Check for similar churches locally.

Legal Resources:

If you are having a legal issue because of your identity as a transgender person, call Lambda Legal’s Help Desk for your region. While Lambda Legal takes very few cases, they do have a database of resources and Cooperating Attorney names which may be of assistance to you in your situation.

Trans Women Specific Resources:

Transsexual Women’s Successes A great source for transwomen, or those who are questioning.

Transsexual Road Map Also, another transwoman site that has been recommended.

Trans Men Specific Resources:

Hudson FTM Resource Guide is by far the best trans men guide on the internet thusfar. It covers topics like how to shave, what haircut styles will make you look more masculine, testosterone, surgery, clothing, and much more.

DIY Self Injection Video This Youtube video can be a bit on the cheesy side, but is VERY helpful for any guy who wants to learn how to self-inject (which is a damn good skill). Go watch it!

Nick Gorton Guide for Medical Professionals is a great resource for activists and medical professionals alike. Spread the love, and give this to your doctor’s on a CD!

Compounding Pharmacies for HRT:

The Apothecary Shops Great reviews! Considered one of the cheapest.

Apothecure Pharmacy

Stroheckers Pharmacy

And surprisingly, Publix tends to offer injectable testosterone at competitive rates to the mail in compounding pharmacies. So make sure you price shop prior to making a purchase.
